Christmas Break with Mr. Jake

I've had a really good break so far. Waaay too much happened to say here. I went to Kentucky and met some of Sarah's extended family, then stayed with her in Tennessee for a couple days, then came back to Huntsville with her where she stayed for a couple days and met some of my extended family. She left Christmas Eve night. I had a good Christmas yesterday with an entertaining demonstration of a 40 or 50 year old vacuum that my uncle restored for my grandma using parts from 96 vacuums taking him around 10 years to make. Very neat.

My dad walked into my room this morning. He asked if I was done ripping his Santana CD, which was the case, so I grabbed it off my desk and handed it to him. I was internally a little aggravated because he had been coming up the stairs often today and disturbing me, one time being to show me some Santana, which I was already familiar with. Then he asked me if I loved Sarah. I was a little surprised and didn't know what to say at first. How would he react? I told him that I did, and he asked if had taken her out to a fancy dinner yet. I replied that I had been planning to take her out for one soon. He pulled a bill out of his pocket and handed it to me. It was a $100 bill. "A $100 nice dinner?" I asked, kind of taken aback by the amount. He just hugged me and started crying and saying that I am a man now, how much he likes Sarah, that I did good, and that he is proud of me. Then he left the room fairly abruptly and left me standing there, where I stayed for a few minutes before crying myself.

I then went to the bank to find that it was closed. Poo. So I went over to Jessica's house to watch a movie, because, as many of you should know, she is stuck there for a while for post-surgery. Now I'm back home.

I have been very busy lately, but come Christmas break it should be a bit easier. I do still have to do Christmas shopping.... I'm not looking forward to that. I dunno what I'm getting anybody yet.

Renown! Gosh, it's gonna rock hardcore. *rewinds* Okay, I've been partly involved with a startup for downtown Huntsville. It is basically going to be a Christian-oriented, but PG-13 rated, environment for young adults to hang out, have some coffee, study, go to concerts (Christian or secular from time to time), and so on and so forth. It's going to be an extravaganza. I'm going to be involved with the weekly music, probably playing bass with C3, but I also might be involved with their video projects. The budget for that is going to be out of this world (compared to previous projects I have been involved in); the cameras alone (probably four of them) will value around $42,000. I hope I will have the time to be involved. I also hope I can have some irregular access to some of this equipment. Even if I am not directly involved with the video, this is a possibility. Hear that, Huntsville NPFAT guys? EQUIPMENT!

I love Sarah very much. Elaborating on that would not do it justice, so I will just leave it at that.

I have a possible co-op job for next semester. I'm not sure if I would rather do that or take classes. I would probably be more busy taking classes, and I wouldn't be getting any money for that, but there is a class I really want to take that is only being offered next semester.

I don't want to go home for the break, but I have to.

I'm wanting to at least start the back end before I put it up.

The basic concept of it is that my updates are all just short thoughts, small enough to fit on an index card. In fact, I decided that I would actually make them appear on little index cards on the site. Right now, that's about all there is, but I will add a bunch of features once I have a back end set up. You guys will really like what I have in mind, assuming I can think of a way to pull some of this off.

Independent Artists on iTunes

Artists on major record labels tend to get about five cents per song they sell on online music stores. Though selling CDs is no different, this has always been a major gripe of mine. When Apple first started the iTunes Music Store, I was expecting the artists to get a bigger chunk of the money for their songs, but instead, the record labels just held on to more for themselves. On top of that, Apple had to settle with the RIAA to DRM all the music they sell. That is starting to change. While Apple is still selling music with DRM, independent artists and labels can now freely apply to have their music sold on the iTunes Music Store. What does this mean? Artists can get more like fifty cents per song instead of five. Compare this with the money record labels are handing out and it would make sense for the labels to start panicking. With such good return, there is less motivation to stick with the major record labels.

Just something I thought of while reading up on the latest.

Good grief I have been busy. I would explain, but I would leave so much out. Suffice to say that after today and yesterday, I am sore and stressed beyond all belief (the stress is going away, but the soreness remains). Videos, praise band, homework, classes, etc. owned me. Time for bed. Maybe I will make a real update tomorrow or something.

Moved In!

So, I'm all moved in and stuff. NCRH II is much cooler than NCRH I... now you Auburn guys can be even more jealous. Our showers are now not tiny. Our furniture is a more dark, cherry color and looks less like toy furniture. Our couches and chairs in the common room are actually real couches and chairs with cushions and padded arms, not that hard, flat crap at NCRH I. Downsides: the fridge and microwave are a little bit smaller and my room at the moment is smaller than average because it on the inside corner of the building. In a couple of weeks, all four of us will be moving down the hall to room 424 because that's the room we signed up for in the first place, so the room size thing isn't a big issue because of that. CNS hasn't screwed up the network any more than last year, as far as I can tell. They even unblocked IRC some time before move-in, so I don't even have much to complain about. On the downside, there will soon be a user limit problem on IRC because CNS stuck everybody behind a NAT of some kind, so we now all appear to have the same IP.

Wow...

Wow, what a week! I don't even know where to begin. I'll start with the Campus Crusade leaders retreat. We went to a house that was built into a cliff, so there was at least one natural rock wall in each room, and it was huge. The house was really cool. Most of what we did was in preparation of the coming semester. We are going to be far more organized this year. Then we came back to the 'Ville, and Sarah went to my house. We enjoyed each others' company as well as God's company. One awesome thing about my relationship with Sarah is that God is so involved. He shows up all the time, and I am just amazed at how well it seems Sarah and I just fit together. Anyway, she left on Sunday, and then craziness ensued. Praise band practice and web site making and all kinds of things.

Okay, I'm going to be quite busy. Here are a few things I will be involved in this fall: classes, homework, Crusade weekly meetings and other CCC activities, praise band, D-Group, No Place for a Toaster, Locust Grove orchestra, CCC video production, and "Psalm 23". I am passing off my web site duties to Robert, who is trading his duties in video production for them. I set up a temporary web site before I handed the job off to Robert, which is pretty nice. The praise band met for this fall for the first time last night, and I can tell already that we are going to sound awesome. There is a lot of video planning in all three of my major video groups (CCC, No Place for a Toaster, and Psalm 23). I will be very busy with them. Luckily, I won't need to mess with any post-production for Psalm 23, only acting. The other two will involve my direction and involvement in preproduction, production and post-production though. One good thing from all this, however, will be the fact that I will have three times the resources to sap for the purposes of my filming and editing so this is all very good in terms of production economics. It's just a matter of whether I will hold up. Somewhere in there, I will make some room for Sarah. <3

Aaaand... I found out this morning that I GET TO KEEP MY SCHOLARSHIP even though my GPA isn't high enough. The right person just happened to walk into the Financial Aid office while my mom was there (as she was being told that I did not qualify for any form of the scholarship, not even a partial scholarship), and she just happened to look at my records while she was there, and she just happened to decide that I had demonstrated enough effort this summer to receive the full scholarship this fall, and I can keep it permanently if I manage to pull my GPA up enough this semester! God is awesome.

Okay, would somebody please tell me why blocking IRC seems like such a good idea to CNS?! All it will do is stir up multitudes of angry geeks all over campus, including me. IRC is the only way I talk to many people, and I have found that it is one of the best resources on the Internet for tech-related questions since there are so many techies on it. WHAT IS WRONG WITH CNS?

Despite my mood in my last post, my weekend has definitely gone back into the positive end of the scale. God is so awesome, and I'm so glad I saw Sarah. There is so much that happened, and I have so little time right now, I'll just leave the interesting parts to your imagination.

On another note, isn't it annoying when people talk about how great their day/weekend/week was and then not go into any detail about? It's like picking up a book and only getting to read the introduction.
